Marangu Route – The Classic Kilimanjaro Climb

The Marangu Route is one of Kilimanjaro’s most popular paths, known for its gradual ascent, well-marked trails, and hut accommodations, making it a preferred choice for those who appreciate extra comfort while trekking. Unlike other routes that require camping, Marangu provides shared dormitory-style huts, offering a sheltered and cozy experience in all weather conditions.

Beginning in dense rainforest, the trail ascends steadily through heathlands and moorlands, leading to alpine deserts and finally to the summit of Uhuru Peak (5,895 m) the highest point in Africa. The six-day itinerary is designed to allow trekkers to acclimatize properly while following the only route that offers the same ascent and descent path.

With two hotel nights included one before the climb and one after you'll have time to prepare and recover. Our professional mountain guides, porters, and cooks ensure a safe and enjoyable experience, handling logistics so you can focus on the climb and the breathtaking scenery along the way.

Tour Details

The 6-day Marangu Route is an excellent choice for climbers who prefer a direct yet scenic path to Kilimanjaro’s summit. The steady incline and well-maintained trails make it accessible for first-time trekkers and experienced hikers alike.

Your journey begins with a walk through Kilimanjaro’s lush rainforest, where you’ll encounter tropical birds, monkeys, and towering trees. As you ascend, the vegetation thins and transitions into moorlands and high-altitude deserts, eventually leading to Kibo Hut, the launching point for the summit push. The final ascent begins at midnight, culminating in a spectacular sunrise over the glaciers as you reach Uhuru Peak (5,895 m).

This itinerary includes a gradual ascent to support acclimatization, while the descent follows the same path, allowing for a familiar return route. With well-maintained huts for overnight stays, the Marangu Route is ideal for those looking for a comfortable and rewarding Kilimanjaro climb.

Enjoy a leisurely evening, fuel up with a good meal, and get plenty of rest your trekking adventure begins tomorrow!

Day 2: Marangu Gate (1,860 m) to Mandara Hut (2,700 m)

Hiking Time: 5 hours
Highlights: Lush rainforest hike, sightings of monkeys and exotic birds

After an early breakfast at the hotel, your adventure starts with a scenic drive to Marangu Gate, the official entrance to Kilimanjaro National Park. Upon arrival, you’ll complete your registration process, meet your dedicated mountain crew, and receive a final equipment check before setting off on the trail.

The first leg of the trek takes you through Kilimanjaro’s lush rainforest, one of the most biodiverse zones on the mountain. The trail winds through towering trees, dense vegetation, and a rich variety of wildlife. Keep an eye out for colobus monkeys swinging through the canopy, vibrant bird species, and unique plant life only found in this part of the world.

The well-maintained path gradually ascends towards Mandara Hut, your first overnight stop. Upon arrival, you’ll have time to rest and enjoy a warm meal before setting out on an optional short hike to Maundi Crater, which offers spectacular panoramic views of the Kenyan countryside.

Day 3: Mandara Hut (2,700 m) to Horombo Hut (3,700 m)

Hiking Time: 6–8 hours
Highlights: Transition to moorlands, panoramic views of Mawenzi and Kibo Peaks

After breakfast, the trek continues as you leave behind the rainforest’s dense vegetation and enter the heath and moorland zone. The trail opens up, revealing rolling hills, rugged landscapes, and scattered giant lobelias—a striking plant species found only at high altitudes.

As you ascend, the air becomes crisper, and the surroundings more arid and exposed, offering breathtaking views of Kibo and Mawenzi, two of Kilimanjaro’s most famous peaks. This is a fantastic opportunity for photography, as the wide-open terrain provides unobstructed vistas.

After a challenging yet rewarding day of hiking, you’ll arrive at Horombo Hut, where you’ll be welcomed with a hot meal and warm drinks. From here, you can admire awe-inspiring sunset views over the mountain, a perfect way to end the day before resting in your hut for the night.

Day 4: Acclimatization Day at Horombo Hut (3,700 m)

Hiking Time: 3–4 hours (optional hike)
Highlights: Acclimatization hike, stunning views of Zebra Rocks and Kibo

Today is a dedicated acclimatization day to help your body adjust to the altitude, improving your chances of reaching the summit. After breakfast, you’ll take a short hike to Zebra Rocks (4,000 m), a striking rock formation known for its black-and-white striped patterns caused by mineral deposits.

This "climb high, sleep low" strategy is crucial for adjusting to the thinner air. The hike is relatively short but helps your body adapt while giving you an opportunity to enjoy incredible panoramic views of Kibo Peak.

Afterward, you’ll return to Horombo Hut, where you can spend the rest of the day resting, hydrating, and preparing for the upcoming climb.

Day 5: Horombo Hut (3,700 m) to Kibo Hut (4,700 m)

Hiking Time: 6–8 hours
Highlights: Crossing the Saddle, high-altitude desert terrain, breathtaking views

After breakfast, you’ll continue your ascent through Kilimanjaro’s alpine desert zone, a stark and rugged landscape with rocky terrain and sparse vegetation. The trail crosses The Saddle, a vast plateau between Mawenzi and Kibo Peaksthat feels almost otherworldly.

The high-altitude conditions make this a challenging yet rewarding trek, so maintaining a steady pace and staying hydrated is key. Upon reaching Kibo Hut, the base camp for your summit attempt, you’ll have time to rest, hydrate, and mentally prepare for the final push to Uhuru Peak.

After an early dinner, you’ll head to bed for a few hours of sleep, as the summit attempt begins just after midnight.

Day 6: Kibo Hut (4,700 m) to Uhuru Peak (5,895 m), Descend to Horombo Hut (3,700 m)

Hiking Time: 10–14 hours
Highlights: Early morning summit attempt, breathtaking sunrise from Africa’s highest peak

The summit push begins just after midnight, as you wake to a dark, starlit sky and prepare for the most challenging yet rewarding section of your journey. Equipped with headlamps and warm gear, you’ll make the slow, steady ascent up the steep and rocky trail toward Gillman’s Point (5,681 m), where the first golden hues of sunrise begin to light up the sky.

From here, it’s a final push to Uhuru Peak (5,895 m), the highest point in Africa! Standing at the summit, you’ll experience a profound sense of achievement, surrounded by majestic glaciers and sweeping views of Tanzania below.

After capturing this unforgettable moment, the descent begins, taking you back down to Kibo Hut for a short restbefore continuing to Horombo Hut, where you’ll spend the night, exhausted but incredibly fulfilled.

Day 7: Horombo Hut (3,700 m) to Marangu Gate (1,860 m), Transfer to Hotel

Hiking Time: 5–7 hours
Highlights: Final rainforest trek, summit certificate ceremony, celebration meal

Your final day on the mountain begins with breakfast at Horombo Hut, followed by a gradual descent back through the moorlands and rainforest. This final stretch of the journey allows you to soak in the last views of Kilimanjaro’s breathtaking landscapes while reflecting on your incredible achievement.

Upon reaching Marangu Gate, you’ll complete the final trek registration and receive your official summit certificate, a lasting souvenir of your successful climb.

A vehicle will be waiting to transfer you back to your hotel in Moshi, where you can enjoy a well-earned shower, a delicious celebratory meal, and a comfortable night’s sleep.
